Stacks Bowers and Sothebys to Make Unprecedented Offering of Rarities as Part of IV of the D. Brent Pogue Collection

On May 24, 2016, in cooperation with Sothebys at Sothebys International Headquarters in New York City, Stacks Bowers Galleries will offer not only the finest known 1804 silver dollar, but also the rare and legendary 1822 half eagle. Although both were once included in the famous Virgil M. Brand Collection, never before in auction history have these two rarities appeared at auction together. And, these two masterpieces will be accompanied by a similarly unparalleled group of some of the finest and rarest coins produced in the United States in the first part of the 19th century. 

D. Brent Pogue Collection Becomes Most Valuable Ever Sold

With the third sale of a planned series of five, the D. Brent Pogue Collection sales, presented by Stacks Bowers Galleries in association with Sothebys, became the most valuable series of numismatic auctions in history. When Lot 3132, a MS-67+ (PCGS) 1807 half eagle, brought $282,000, the D. Brent Pogue sales officially surpassed the $62 million in sales netted by the 26 parts of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection between 2003 and 2013. In 158 lots, the third installment realized a total of $17,135,612.50, bringing the total sales of the three Pogue auctions held thus far to a record breaking $68,577,182.

Solid Results Achieved at Stacks Bowers January 2016 NYINC Auction!

Stacks Bowers Galleries is pleased to announce the results of their January 2016 NYINC auction of World Coins, World Paper Money and Ancient Coins. The firms first sale of 2016 featured a fabulous array of material that was anchored by several prominent collections, including Part III of the Syracuse Collection of highly prized Greek and Roman issues, as well as the legendary Lennart Philipson Collection of Swedish coinage. Other notable consignments included the Groh Collection of Czechoslovakia gold and the Dr. Michael Phillip Collection. Overall results were a vote of confidence in the current market, with over $3.9 million in prices realized. (All prices realized include the standard buyers premium.)

A unique Fr.212b 1864 $500 Interest Bearing Note that had been off of the market for more than 40 years realized $352,500 to lead the Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Winter Expo. The Stacks Bowers Galleries Official Whitman Expo Auction, which also included U.S. coins and world coins and currency, realized over $7.9 million, with the currency bringing $1,534,950. All prices include a 17.5% Buyers Premium.
