?Stack’s Bowers Galleries continues to see strong action in the numismatic market. A 1921 Mexico 50 Peso, graded MS-65+ by PCGS reached a final sale price of $17,400 highlighting both the strength of the Mexican market, and the extreme popularity of coins in exceptional condition. The market for Czechoslovakian Ducats in uncirculated grades continued its ascent, with a 1930 example graded NGC MS-64+ selling for $11,400. Despite recent geopolitical events, Russian prices appear undampened, as is highlighted by the key date 1903-AP Ruble offered in NGC MS-63 selling for $9,900. Modern low mintage commemoratives also are generating immense premiums including a pair of "Three Graces" issues, one from Great Britain that realized $19,200 and the other from Alderney, that sold for $18,000.
In ancient coins, top end Roman issues and all Byzantine gold is seeing tremendous strength as well. Though the strong market had pushed up Roman and Byzantine prices, this increase was not nearly as dramatic as the prices generated for Greek issues. This trend was seemingly bucked by a pair of impressive results. A Billion Nummus of Constantine I from the Siscia Mint graded NGC MS?, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5 that was preserved in museum-worthy quality reached an impressive $1,560 on an estimate of $60-100. On the Byzantine side, an AV Histamenon Nomisma from Constantinople graded NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Ex-Mount, Wrinkled that featured Christ’s portrait sold for $1,920 on a $300-$500 estimate. All these prices confirm exceptional strength and participation in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ offering.
In total, this auction brought more than $1.66 million, setting a new Stack’s Bowers’ record for a non-Hong Kong Collectors Choice Auction, topping the previous record holder our June 2021 event.
