Our Spring 2022 U.S. Currency Auction is now available for viewing and bidding at StacksBowers.com. There are quite a few high-grade rarities found within the catalog, including lot 20469. a neat CH#613 1902 $10 Red Seal from The First National Bank of White Plains, New York that is graded PMG Very Fine 20.
This extremely rare White Plains Red Seal is one of only two known and is certainly among the "Holy Grails" of Westchester County Nationals. In operation only from 1902 to 1920, only Third Charter 1902 series notes were issued with most of the survivors today being Plain Back $5s. This rare note is attractive with four full margins, decent brown ink signatures and bright red overprint on off-white paper that retains some crispness. While folds are naturally visible given the grade, this note retains a remarkably fresh appearance and will be a prize for its next owner. Its last appearance in September 2004 required a bid of $25,300, and we expect spirited bidding this time as well.
