Department of Stack’s Bowers Galleries is elated to offer the catalog for our
2018 January New York International Auction, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in
New York City. Since New York City is known to always have the best of the best,
we do everything we can to deliver to you a sale that includes fresh and
exciting material each time we host an auction there. With the help of our
industry leading consignment directors and our ever-growing clientele, we have
put together a sale worthy of New York. A few of the scarcest notes in the
World Paper hobby can be found within this catalog. Some are the finest and, in
a few cases, are the only notes known for their types.
One of the areas that some
of these scarce pieces hail from is British Honduras. We are offering an Issued
1894 1 Dollar Type 1 note that comes directly from the family of Albert E.
Morlan, American Consul in Belize City in the 1890s. We are also offering a 5
Dollar Specimen from the same series, which should equally excite collectors.
Both of these pieces are exceedingly rare and are the finest examples we have
seen or know of in their respective types. We would like to extend our
gratitude to Pablo Hoffman, of Nuevo Mundo World Paper Money, for sharing his
extensive knowledge of British Honduras, aiding the cataloging of these special
highlights.
We have a very strong
showing in Canada, with a pair of gem Bank of Canada notes with Serial Number
9, along with many rare charter and private bank notes that include a Union
Bank of Canada 50 Dollar note. We are also offering a very strong assortment of
Australian notes led by a 6 Pence note and a 2 Shillings note from the Camp Hay
Internment Camp Seven.
Some other highlights
include a very scarce Puerto Rico 5 Pesos from 1896 in VF 25 condition. This is
the finest certified example of the type according to the PMG census. Other
exciting notes we are offering include a first issue Solomon Islands 10
Shillings from 1921 and a very scarce 1906 500 Pesos from the Philippines
Islands. Along with that high denomination rarity, we are also offering the
large size 100,000 Piso and a grouping of VICTORY notes in both specimen and
replacement form. This group will be offered as individual lots.
As mentioned earlier,
words do not adequately express our excitement for this offering. We expect
this to be a collector-driven auction, with many eyes from overseas closely
