An amazing Gem Mint State 1875-CC twenty-cent piece, tied for finest certified by PCGS, will attract enthusiastic bidding activity in our upcoming Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo later this month. Offered as part of our Rarities Night session, the pale golden surfaces of this eye-catching Gem are alive with cartwheel luster and a rich array of crimson and royal blue iridescence. The strike is as sharp as ever seen for the date and type, with only a solitary obverse star showing any weakness of note. In addition, the reverse is prooflike.
The twenty-cent piece was produced in just four years 1875 through 1878, with 1877 and 1878 being Proof-only issues with none made for circulation. Philadelphia struck coins in all four years of the denomination, including the Proofs. San Francisco struck the denomination only in 1875, while Carson City struck coins in 1875 and 1876. The 1876-CC twenty-cent piece is a great American rarity, and collectors who desire a Carson City coin of the denomination nearly always “settle” for an 1875-CC. The date is not very elusive in circulated grades, but its availability dwindles significantly in Mint State, with Gems of the date few and far between. An ideal candidate for an advanced PCGS Registry Set, the upcoming 1875-CC twenty-cent piece will turn heads at viewing time and will leave a lasting impression once the gavel falls.
