Top-Pop Gem 1927 Peace Dollar Featured in our November 2019 Auction

The Peace silver dollar struck from 1921 through 1935 has always been one of the most popular United States coins series. Struck to commemorate the end of World War I, it is a relatively short series but a few of the issues present significant challenges in high grades. While the finest examples regularly exceed the six-figure mark at auction, like this Superb Gem 1921 in our August 2018 ANA Auction, the legendary Proof issues from 1921 and 1922 have earned over $300,000, including this example from our August 2014 ANA Auction.

Appearing in our upcoming November 2019 Baltimore Auction is an astounding 1927 Peace dollar that ranks among the very finest known. Certified MS-66 by PCGS, it is tied with the top examples seen by that service. Its surfaces are intensely frosty, notably pearlescent and display subtle shades of peach and champagne. The fields exhibit a fine, satin-like texture that delivers exceptional eye appeal.  It is tied with just 18 other pieces on the PCGS Population Report and none have been graded finer, making it an important example for advanced collectors and participants of the PCGS Set Registry.

The 1927 has the second lowest mintage of any circulation-strike issue in the series, with a mintage of 848,000 (360,649 coins were struck in 1928 in Philadelphia). While it is readily available in lower Mint State grades, it becomes elusive in Gem condition. Series specialists Roger Burdette comments on this rarity in his Guide Book of Peace Dollars (2008): "The 1927 issue is the rarest Philadelphia-minted coin in Uncirculated condition, although the 1928 is often given this honor because of its very low total mintage. Coins in MS-63 are fairly common, but in MS-64 and higher, this coin is one of the rarer issues in the series."

This MS-66 (PCGS) 1927 Peace dollar is a significant highlight of our Official Auction of the 2019 Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo.
