Crossing the block this
November at our Baltimore Official Auction of the Whitman Coin &
Collectibles Winter Expo, will be Lot 10311, a $5000 Federal Reserve Note. This
gorgeous Madison $5000 from the Chicago district is certified as Extremely Fine
40 Net Repaired and offers great appeal for the grade. The print run for this
series date and district was only 6,600. The offered banknote features the
serial number G00000351A, a number new to census information. Excellent margins
and terrific centering will appeal to collectors. There are some corner folds
seen on the top left and bottom right, along with some minor earthquaking.
Other handling typical for the grade is also present. The repair is minor,
but can be seen to the left of the top margin.
The face value of these
banknotes cements their place in numismatic lore. The fact that they are still
redeemable at face value makes for fascinating dialogue among both collectors
and general observers. Bills of this denomination have not been produced in
nearly 70 years, and we certainly cannot imagine the denomination ever being
reintroduced. With both the 1928 and 1932 series combined, there are roughly
210 $5000 notes known, and only a few collections will have the opportunity to
own this majestic bill.
