Our April 2024 Hong Kong auction will feature many numismatic treasures from the vintage and modern Chinese series during the highly anticipated Rarities Night session. One such standout is an off-metal strike in gold of the Year 1 (1916) silver Dollar. An “imperial” issue, so styled as it celebrates Yuan Shih-kai’s short-lived bid to revive an empire in China; it is an incredible rarity that is not often encountered. On the cusp of Gem status, graded PCGS SPECIMEN-64+, it features an exceptionally sharp and exacting strike, with cartwheeling luster and die polishing observed in the fields. The gold retains a brassy-olive hue, with only a few subtle carbon spots (near the rear of the dragon). Our first offering of the type since 2015, this remarkable specimen is tied with just two others for the top spot in the PCGS census. It will be just right for the finest and most advanced cabinets dedicated to Chinese numismatics.
