One of the finest-known examples of one of the most beautiful and sought-after U.S. coins, a 1907 High Relief Wire Rim double eagle certified MS-67 by PCGS, will be offered as lot 5204 in Rarities Night of Stack’s Bowers Galleries August 2023 Global Showcase Auction. A Superb Gem High Relief double eagle an extraordinary prize for any numismatist.
Theodore Roosevelt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ collaboration to revolutionize the appearance of American coinage has been well-documented by numismatic historians and the coins associated with it are avidly collected. The High Relief format proved impractical for mass production and commerce, but 11,250 were ultimately produced. These were saved at a relatively high rate for their beauty, historic first-year issue status, and distinctive strike. Thousands survive and have been graded by third-party grading services, but very few have earned grades above Gem Mint State.
The Wire Rim is the more common of two subtypes of 1907 High Relief double eagle, named for the ridge of metal raised out of the rims. The two subtypes are the result of two different collars used in striking.
The coin we are offering is among the finest known. PCGS’ Population Report records 18 grading events for 1907 High Relief Wire Rim double eagles in MS-67 with only five finer events recorded. Only five finer grading events for Flat Edge 1907 High Relief double eagle are recorded.
Our cataloger notes: “This virtually pristine coin presents intense mint luster on predominantly medium gold surfaces. Delicate rose-gold highlights are also evident on both sides – very attractive. Fully struck with a beautiful appearance that will delight gold enthusiasts as well as advanced type collectors.”
