Last week, we discussed an 1873-S Open 3 double eagle on offer in our June 2023 Showcase Auction. Though a relatively available issue, at least as compared with its Closed 3 counterpart, attractive examples of the coin are not everyday items. We are pleased to be presenting a second noteworthy example in our June sale.
This example is graded MS-61 by PCGS. Our catalog notes that it “exhibits warmer color in blended olive-honey and golden-rose shades,” when compared to the previous coin. The description continues: “Both sides are sharply struck with a full endowment of lively frosty to modestly semi-reflective luster.”
