The Stack’s Bowers Galleries December 2023 Hong Kong Collectors Choice Online Auction offers a large selection of Chinese and other Asian coins. Many conditional rarities and seldom seen pieces are featured, so collectors are advised to peruse the lots at StacksBowers.com. This week we’re highlighting some of the lovely Southeast Asian coins up for auction.
The silver issues from mid-19th century Annam (modern Vietnam) are as beautiful as they are elusive, so collectors will be pleased to find multiple stellar examples in the sale. Most striking among them is lot 31012, a ¼ Lang issued under emperor Thieu Tri. Well-struck and delightfully wholesome, it offers a bold impressionistic dragon motif accented by mottled amber tones. The Burmese series is always popular for its unique designs, and collectors have a chance to acquire problem-free Kyats in Mint State with lots 31042 and 31043. Lovers of Thai coinage will be drawn to the gold 50 Baht offered as lot 31770, a gorgeous near-Gem. Finally, lot 31064 presents a proof copper 10 Centimes of Cambodian king Norodom I, notable for its freshness and fiery reflectivity.
Please see below for a full listing of this auction’s offerings. The first session will start closing on December 7 at 10:00 AM HKT (December 6, 6:00 PM PST). The second session will start closing on December 8 at 10:00 AM HKT (December 7, 6:00 PM PST).
