The Stack’s Bowers Galleries November Baltimore official currency auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo features a number of high grade United States large size type notes. Among those notes is a stunning Fr. 263 1886 $5 “Silver Dollar Back” Silver Certificate.
These “Silver Dollar Back” notes are so named for the five Morgan silver dollars seen on the ornate green printed back design, a single 1886 dated Morgan with the obverse facing up at center flanked on each side with two Morgans with the reverse facing up. The face of the note features the portrait of President Ulysses S. Grant to the right of center. Fr.263s feature a large brown spiked Treasury seal and the engraved signatures of Treasury officials Rosecrans and Huston.
This remarkably high grade example has been graded Gem New 66 PPQ by PCGS. It is one of just six Fr.263s graded at that level with none finer. It is exceptionally well centered with beautifully original paper surfaces and boldly printed inks.
“Silver Dollar Back” notes are extremely popular among collectors and have broad appeal not only among currency enthusiasts but coin aficionados as well. The note is found in lot #30301 and carries an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.
