To be held in conjunction with the auction of Part II of the L. E. Bruun Collection – March 13-16, 2025 in Zurich, Switzerland
Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to announce The Zurich Sale of Ancient and World Coins, to be held alongside Part II of the L. E. Bruun Collection on March 13-16, 2025, at the Hotel Baur au Lac in Zurich, Switzerland.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries has long held auctions of ancient and world coins in the United States and for the last decade and a half in Hong Kong. More recently, Stack’s Bowers Galleries expanded its operations into Europe through the opening of its Copenhagen, Denmark offices and as the official auctioneer of the MIF Paper Money Fair in Maastricht.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ international expansion has continued with the auctions of the L. E. Bruun Collection of Scandinavian Coinage, the world’s most valuable collection of world coins to ever come to market. The inaugural L. E. Bruun Collection auction grossed €14,820,900 (approximately US$16.5 million) on September 14, 2025, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The collection, amassed by Bruun (the Danish “butter king”) from the 1850s through his death in 1923, was held as a reserve for the Royal Danish Coin and Medal Collection for a period of 100 years after his death. If the Royal Collection was damaged or stolen during that century, the L. E. Bruun Collection would become a gift to the Danish state. But if the Royal Collection remained intact, the collection would be sold at auction, with the proceeds benefitting Bruun’s direct descendants. On November 21, 2023, that 100-year waiting period ran out, and with the Royal Danish Coin and Medal Collection intact, L. E. Bruun’s fantastic collection of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish numismatics became destined for the auction block, with Stack’s Bowers Galleries awarded the contract for this world-renowned collection.
Capitalizing on international attention for the ongoing series of L. E. Bruun auctions, Stack’s Bowers Galleries will hold auctions of ancient and world coins in conjunction with those of the L. E. Bruun Collection. The first of these sales, The Zurich Sale, will beheld alongside Part II of the Bruun Collection in Zurich in March 2025, and encompass a curated mix of coins of the ancient and modern worlds. Consignments will be actively accepted through December 5, 2024.
