Author: Stack's Bowers Galleries / July 31, 2015

IRVINE, Calif. (July 2015)— When the bright sun of August bakes the land from coast to coast, that’s a sign for numismatists to prepare for the annual summer ANA World’s Fair of Money Convention, held this year in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, a familiar venue for thousands of collectors. As an Official Auctioneer of this year’s ANA Convention, Stack’s Bowers Galleries offers a selection of great coins ranging from readily collectable pieces to great rarities, in copper, nickel, silver, and gold. From colonials to commemoratives, this sale has it all. Beyond that, our staff will be on hand from start to finish of the convention. Come meet, greet, and talk with us. Dave Bowers will be giving several educational presentations, and Dave, Harvey Stack, and Larry Stack will be part of a dynamic question and answer forum moderated by Christine Karstedt. There will be a lot going on!

As to our auction sessions, copper highlights are many. Half cents include an 1831 First Restrike Proof-66 RB PCGS with CAC approval. A gorgeous 1807/6 large cent, Sheldon-273, from the famous Cardinal Collection is MS-66 RD PCGS and in an OGH with a CAC sticker, and is bound to draw bids from all directions. Among later copper coins ,Indian cent specialists will jump at the opportunity to obtain a rare Proof 1864 L on Ribbon Indian cent certified as Proof-65 RB by PCGS and further highlighted by an Eagle Eye Photo Seal Certificate—one of the greatest American Proof rarities after the 1850s.

Silver highlights, of which there many remarkable coins, include a Mint State 1871-CC dime. One of the “big four” among Liberty Seated dimes, this NGC-certified rarity will make a grand addition to any cabinet. A truly amazing MS-68 PCGS-certified 1875-S twenty-cent piece, also from the Cardinal Collection, will stir up a great deal of bidding activity. Liberty Seated quarters are in fine form, with an 1865-S certified as MS-67 by NGC and ranking among the finest examples of any date of the era extant. Another highlight is a gorgeous AU-58 PCGS-certified and CAC approved 1802 Draped Bust half dollar. Silver dollars begin with the first year of issue, 1794, and continue through the popular Liberty Seated, Morgan, and Peace series. A 1799 Draped Bust dollar, BB-164, MS-65 PCGS, is a remarkable gem as is a splendid 1839 Proof Gobrecht dollar. In addition, where else could you possibly find an ultra-rare Proof Sandblast-Finish 1922 High Relief Peace dollar certified Specimen-64 by PCGS?

Among gold treasures is a Proof-65 Deep Cameo PCGS-certified 1859 Liberty Head quarter eagle with Type II Reverse, a coin that shows a Proof mintage of just 80 pieces in the Guide Book, with that figure split between Type I and Type II reverse styles. Another rare golden prize is a 1797 Draped Bust Right half eagle, Small Eagle Reverse, 15 Stars, Wide Date, a Rarity-7 issue graded AU-58 by PCGS. Among later half eagles a Mint State 1909-O will attract attention. Eagles are represented by numerous highlights from the 1790s onward, including a Mint State 1799. An NGC-certified 1853-O branch mint Proof double eagle represents an early rarity from the series that will certainly turn heads at bidding time. And what would one of our sales be without an important, high-grade MCMVII High Relief double eagle? How about a PCGS-certified MS-66 specimen with eye appeal galore?

If you plan to attend the convention, the famous Stack’s Bowers Galleries red carpet will be rolled out for you. Have a question? Simply want to “talk coins”? We will be here. If you are staying at home, bidding can be done by telephone or in real time on the Internet. Choose your venue and plan to be part of our memorable event.
