Author: Stack's Bowers Galleries / July 30, 2013

IRVINE, Calif. (July 2013) – Stack’s Bowers Galleries is proud to present the Official Auction of the August 2013 ANA World’s Fair of Money in Chicago, Illinois. Spanning fourteen live auction sessions from August 11-16, Stack’s Bowers will offer everything from U.S. coins and paper money to tokens and medals, ancient and world coins, and world paper money. Some of the biggest names in numismatics will be represented in this sale—selections from the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, the Thos. H. Law Collection, the Richard Jewell Collection, the Bentley Shores Collection, the Dr. Edward and Joanne Dauer Collection of Silver Certificates, and the Demarete Collection will be offered for sale over the course of this spectacular event.

Continuing the legacy of the John J. Ford, Jr. sales, Stack’s Bowers will offer Parts XXII and XXIII of this famed collection as part of their ANA event. Part XXII will feature American Paper Currencies and Part XXIII is comprised of American Medals, Tokens, and Balance Scales—both portions will feature significant rarities and important pieces.

Notable highlights from the Official Auction of the ANA can be found in all numismatic areas. Offered as lot 1080 is the historic 1801 Large Size Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace medal, an avidly sought piece that stands as an emblem of American history. Carried by Lewis and Clark during their westward expedition and distributed to various native peoples in the spirit of peace and friendship, the Large Size Thomas Jefferson Peace medals combine numismatic prestige (the total number in private hands is likely under a dozen) with a profound sense of American history.

U.S. currency showcases several truly spectacular large size notes, including the unique Friedberg 186c 1863 $1,000 Legal Tender note. One of only three collectible examples of the “Morris Design,” this note was discovered in 1966 stored in a jar in an oat bin on a Missouri farm. Graded Apparent Fine-15 by PCGS, this unique rarity is sure to cross the block amid a great deal of action! Also featured in the U.S. currency section is the Dr. Edward and Joanne Dauer Collection of Silver Certificates. The collection includes 82 notes, representing one of the most complete Large Size silver certificates collections ever assembled.

U.S. coins feature a plethora of noteworthy highlights, including a 1792 half disme graded an incredible MS-66 by PCGS. Boasting an exceptional pedigree along with its superb eye appeal, this half disme has been traced back to the Judd and Hayes collections, as well as back to David Rittenhouse, first director of the United States Mint! This example will be offered as part of our Rarities Night session, which will be held on Thursday, August 15 at 6:00pm CT.

Also offered during our Rarities Night event is an amazing Harris & Marchand 51-ounce gold ingot recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America. Most of the ingots recovered from that shipwreck were assayed by Kellogg & Humbert, and Harris & Marchand ingots are in the distinct minority. One of the larger survivors, this beautiful ingot is well impressed and is certainly one of the more desirable ingots from the S.S. Central America. This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity!

About Stack’s Bowers Galleries
Stack’s Bowers Galleries, a division of Fortune 500 Company Spectrum Group International Inc., combines the extraordinary histories of Stack’s, the oldest rare coin auction and retail company in America, with Bowers and Merena Auctions, one of the world’s preeminent auctioneers of rare coins and paper money. The two companies unite to share a combined legacy that spans more than 100 years, and includes the cataloging and sale of many of the most valuable collections to ever cross an auction block — the John J. Ford, Jr. and Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collections, The Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, The Norweb Collection, and the Cardinal Collection — to name just a few. Topping off this amazing numismatic history is the inclusion of the world record for the highest price ever realized at auction for a rare coin, the 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar graded Specimen-66 (PCGS) that realized over $10 million, part of our sale of the famed Cardinal Collection. The company is headquartered in Irvine, California, with offices in New York, New Hampshire and Hong Kong. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is the Official Auctioneer for several important numismatic conventions, including the 2013 ANA World’s Fair of Money and the ANA/PNG Pre-Show, the 2013 ANA National Money Show, and the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo, three times yearly.
