As the Christmas holiday is right around the corner we look back at a festive note we had the pleasure to offer in our official auction of the 2014 Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo. Lot 2111 featured a beautiful "Santa Claus" note from the Pittsfield Bank of Pittsfield, Massachusetts pedigreed to the Peter Mayer Collection Part II.
The 1857 $20 Color Proof note featured a large Durand Type III Santa vignette engraved by George Baldwin of Baldwin, Cousland & Co. The vignette depicts a team of reindeer scurrying across a rooftop with Santa in tow, seated in his rather undersized sleigh. This charmer of a note realized an impressive $4993.75.
This is our last Stack’s Bowers Galleries currency blog for 2014. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a successful year for our currency team.
