Stack’s Bowers Galleries is excited to offer this 1865 2
Dollars Royal Canadian Bank CH #635-100-406 in PMG Very Fine 25 in our January
2021 Auction. The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Bank Notes
lists this Charlton Number as "No Known Issued Notes," and those four
words alone should pique your interest in this incredibly scarce note.
This note was printed by American Bank Note Company and
displays excellent engravings and vignettes typical of the era. Dark green
undertint is seen at bottom of center under the "TWO DOLLARS" and
"TORONTO" text, with the dark green ink also making up the
"2" counters at left and right. The central vignette displays Arms,
flanked by a lion at left and unicorn at right. The portrait vignette at left
is of the Prince of Wales, Edward VII, who in 1860 made a successful visit to
North America, and even laid the cornerstone of Parliament Hill in Ottawa. The
portrait at left depicts a seated woman with a basket of produce. The reverse
of the note is printed in dark brown ink and displays intricate lathe work,
with the bank name at center.
Below is what we believe the annotations on the reverse of
the note say:
"Taken From
Mr. Thomas Dupree
1 April 1866
The First in Pembroke"
The other end of the note reads "Pembroke April 6
1866."
At the time of cataloging, this is the sole note to be
encapsulated by PMG, making this an exciting opportunity for collectors of
Canadian bank notes; this might be the chance of a lifetime to own this issued
1865 2 Dollar note. We would not be surprised if our high estimate is exceeded.
PMG comments "Contemporary Annotation on Back." PMG Pop 1, no other
certified.
The Stack’s Bowers Galleries January 2021 Sale (an
officially sanctioned auction of the NYINC) will take place on January 15-16.
