Proof 1895 Morgan Dollar in VG-10 to be Offered in Rarities Night

Stack’s Bowers Galleries will offer a Proof 1895 Morgan dollar in the June 18, 2024 Rarities Night Session. The coin is certified VG-10 by PCGS with a green CAC sticker.

The reported circulation strike mintage, a paltry 12,000 coins, would have more than qualified the date for key status in its own right. However, these pieces are thought to have been destroyed under the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act, per extensive research conducted by numismatic historian Roger Burdette. The 880 Proof coins constitute the only Philadelphia Mint examples of the date available for Morgan dollar specialists trying to complete a date-mint set. The issue is also a notable U.S. rarity desirable to those outside of the context of Morgan dollar collecting.

In the late 19th and early-20th centuries, unsold Proof coins were sometimes released into circulation, resulting in Proof coins with circulation wear; a number of such 1895 Proof Morgan dollars are known and usually attract strong bids from buyers. Our cataloger offers this assessment of the coin’s appearance: “Richly toned surfaces display deep golden-gray patina that deepens a bit in the protected areas around the design elements. Wear is commensurate with the grade, but there are no troublesome marks to detract from the handsome appearance.”
