Philippines Medal of Manuel L. Quezon

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries October Collectors Choice Online Auction featuring Ancient and World coins is now online and can be viewed here. We are excited to offer a variety of world coins, including this highlight from the Philippines. Today’s highlight is a commemorative silver medal honoring their second president. Manuel Luis Quezon, born on August 19, 1878, was a Filipino soldier, statesman and politician whose popularity ultimately led to his Presidency of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944. During his time as president, he helped tackle issues such as homelessness, military defense and government corruption. Under the threat of Japanese hostility, he sought exile in the United States where he eventually died of tuberculosis. He was initially buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, but was later moved to Manila and finally the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City.

The obverse of the medal features a left facing head of Quezon, "Manuel Luis Quezon" around with a government building in exergue. The reverse design features the coat of arms, with "Commonwealth of the Philippines" above, "United States of America" appears just below. "Nov. 15, 1935" can be found just below the arms.
