In our upcoming January 9, 2016, NYINC sale we will present a very rare Iranian 1927 50 Tomans note. This note caps off a terrific group of these 1924 issue notes included in that sale.
This example of a seldom seen denomination displays good color for the grade and has nice overall appeal. It features a larger format BWC layout and incredible color and intricate lathe work throughout. Both sides bear a gradient brown to green to brown color scheme. Marked below the design on the bottom margin, in a black overprint, it reads “Payable at Isfahan only.” Closer inspection reveals some small and well executed repairs, which are typical for these early Toman notes. This is the second we have handled in issued form with the last being a PMG Fine 12 Net graded note that brought $14,100 as lot# 4485 in our January 2012 NYINC sale. The aforementioned note is the only piece PMG has certified for the catalog number; the current piece would certainly grade a good deal higher. This note is usually missing from even the most comprehensive of collections.
This note will be offered in Lot # 50142 in the live auction session of our upcoming NYINC Sale on January 9 at 9 AM EST in New York City at the Waldorf Astoria.
