Stack’s Bowers Galleries
is pleased to announce the results of their August 2016 ANA World Paper Money
Sale. This sale produced pleasing
results, with many lots fetching above their high estimate. This sale solidified
the notion that many areas of the World Paper Money market are continuing to
grow! (All prices realized include the standard buyer’s premium).
Like many previous ANA World’s
Fair of Money sales, some lots sold above estimate, garnering prices that are sure
to please consignors. Those involved in expanding the Stack’s Bowers audience
deserve the credit for such a consistent streak of successful auctions.
It only took a few lots
into the sale for the highlight piece, a six-figure lot, to cross the podium. An
impressive book of South American Specimens sold for nearly three times the
high estimate at a staggering $141,000. While many people were skeptical of the
strength of South American Specimens, the results from that lot are undeniable.
There were many notes offered
that have not previously been available at auction, including the 1 Dollar 1865
Port Hope banknote from the Royal Canadian Bank that realized $12,925 as Lot
30103. Right after that, in Lot 30104, a $2 St. John’s Newfoundland PMG 65 EPQ
fetched an impressive $14,100, not surprising considering the note was well
above the usual state of preservation.
Notes from India also
brought strong results. Pick 57s, a 10 Rupees specimen from the Reserve Bank of
India (Lot 30259) brought $5,405, well above high estimate and double the
mid-range estimate. Two lots later, the stunning Princely States Artist Essay
sold for $9,400. Qatar items rivaled the results India brought with the 1 Riyal
Remainder in Lot 30383, and the 1 Riyal Progressive Proof in Lot 30384 each
bringing $5,875. The highlight of the Qatar section was the possibly unique
Test Note in Lot 30385 that brought $7,637.
Overall, for both bidders
and consignors, the Stack’s Bowers Galleries World Paper Money auction at the
ANA World’s Fair of Money was a success.
For those considering consignment to a future Stack’s Bowers sale, the
firm is currently accepting consignments for the January 2017 New York
