“Old Kiangnan” Dragon Dollar from Chinese Family Collection Offered in Auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries

I have always considered myself a U.S. coin guy and have rarely ventured into world coins. However, the design, the scarcity, and the beauty of some Chinese coins has pulled me into the fold of world coin collecting. One recent coin that attracted my attention is the 1897 Chinese Silver Dollar featured in Lot 22218 of Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Fall 2021 Hong Kong Auction. This stunning MS-64 example of the Old Kiangnan Dragon Dollar hails from the Chinese Family Collection and has an estimate of $150,000 to $225,000. The obverse of the coin presents subtle toning, while the remainder of the coin is blast white. Our Coins In Motion videos capture the beauty of this coin. Coins in Motion seeks to enable collectors, bidders, and consignors to accurately appreciate how Stack’s Bowers Galleries coins look in hand. Ultra-high resolution animations depict how luster moves over the coin’s surfaces, while the rotating motion allows for any possible imperfections to be revealed.
