Stack’s Bowers Galleries is thrilled to showcase another impressive European gold coin for the August ANA World Coin preview series, following last week’s Fine Sovereign of Queen Mary. For this week we have an incredible 17th century city view 4 Ducats from Nurnberg (Nuremberg).
This impressive gold piece features an obverse design of the personification of Peace, flanked by cherubs, who each support a shield emblazoned with the city’s arms. A Latin inscription encloses the design, with a chronogram date. The reverse is arguably the more impressive design, as it is dominated by a glorious view of the city featuring portions of the old Imperial Castle, St. Sebaldus and St. Lorenz Churches. Above the city is found "Jehovah" radiate, as the city is under the watch of Jehovah. This wonderfully executed design is a lovely representation of this great Free City. This coin displays gorgeous lemon yellow gold throughout and is sure to enhance even the most sophisticated collection.
