Among the highlights of iAuction 3518 is a lovely choice Mint State 1796 dime, graded MS-63 by PCGS. Lustrous silver surface highlight pearlescent iridescence that deepens to darker areas of toning. Both the obverse and reverse show extensive die cracks, which add to the historic charm and visual appeal of this important coin, and are the attributes to the JR-6 die marriage.
Although the dime denomination was authorized by the 1792 act of Congress that established the U.S. Mint, and a handful of pattern dismes were struck in 1792, no federally struck silver coins were issued until 1794, and those were limited to half dimes, half dollars, and silver dollars. It was not until 1796 that the dime and quarter were struck for circulation. All told only 22,135 dimes were struck in 1796.
