Tied for Finest Certified, Ex Jack Lee Collection
A glittering Gem 1921-D Morgan dollar of incredible quality will be one of numerous highlight lots in our upcoming February 2014 Americana Sale to be held in New York City. The coin, formerly a part of the near-legendary Jack Lee Collection of Morgan dollars, is certified MS-67 by PCGS, and is tied for finest certified of the date by that firm.
The 1921-D Morgan represents the only Denver Mint offering in the Morgan dollar series, and though common by general standards, it is anything but common in Gem MS-67. Only seven PCGS-certified examples of the date have received such lofty recognition, with no specimens certified finer (one of those seven pieces bears a “+” qualifier from PCGS).
The Morgan dollar series ground to a halt in 1904 after having served the public since 1878 – or so one thought. Under the provisions of the Pittman Act of 1918, some 270+ million silver dollars were to be melted, but three years later in 1921, it was deemed appropriate to strike silver dollars again. More than 86 million Morgan dollars dated 1921 were forthcoming from the combined presses at Philadelphia, San Francisco and, for the first and only time in the design type, Denver. Later in the year the type was discontinued in favor of the new Peace dollar design.
The remarkable Jack Lee Collection consisted of a set of Morgans that were all of superior quality and generally matching eye appeal. As happens occasionally, a Morgan dollar with the Lee pedigree comes back into the numismatic marketplace where it ultimately achieves a strong price based on quality and pedigree. The 1921-D Jack Lee Morgan dollar in our upcoming Americana Sale in February 2014 may very well set a record price for an example of the date, as it is that nice.
