Our May Collectors Choice Online Auctions will feature two dedicated sessions for collectors of colonial and related coins, anchored by the Charles Smith and Sydney F. Martin collections. Both presentations offer an abundance of collector grade coins in many series that circulated in the colonies and early America, long a specialty of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. These two collections will attract attention from advanced specialists and novice collectors alike.
The first session closes on Monday, May 20, and is anchored by the Charles Smith Collection. It features:
- 5 pieces of Massachusetts silver
- 1 Chalmers Shilling
- 8 Nova Constellatios
- 16 Massachusetts Half Cents and Cents.
- 284 Connecticut coppers
- 35 Machin’s Mills halfpennies
- 65 New Jersey coppers
- 46 Vermont coppers
- 12 Washington pieces
- 10 Fugios
- And more!
The second session, offering selections from the Sydney F. Collection, closes on Tuesday, May 21. This portion of the Martin Collection has many examples from Syd’s collection of St. Patrick coinage. These are pieces from his reference collection, used when he authored the standard reference on the series, and include many Rarity-6 and Rarity-7 varieties. In all there will be 424 lots in the session consisting of:
- 43 St. Patrick coins
- 63 Rosa Americana pieces
- 69 Wood’s Hibernia coins
- 205 French Colonies pieces
- 44 world coins that circulated in early America.
The final category contains Dutch Lion Daalder and Half Daalder pieces. These large silver coins saw extensive circulation in the former Dutch settlements in New York and New Jersey and remained in commerce long after the British took over the New Netherland colony in 1664.
If you are a seasoned specialist in colonial coinage, you are sure to find something to pique your bidding interest. If you are just starting out in collecting colonial or early American coinage, there are many great “entry level” type coins as well.
