Lincoln Cent Deep Obverse Die Cap Offered June 4 CCO Auction

Lot 95160 in our June 4 Collectors Choice Online Auction of error coins from the Barry Harding collection features a unique and incredible quality example of a popular and desirable mint error. This single planchet somehow stuck to the obverse die and was struck multiple times, pushing the outer rim of the planchet up around the die and forming a die cap. Even so, the surfaces are exceptional, with orangey-red color across the obverse. The reverse shows complete deformation from the multiple strikes, with the entire design and original color wiped away. The total blankness of the reverse speaks to the severity of this particular example. The obverse fields are lustrous and display the entire portrait and date clearly.

While all die caps are highly sought after by error specialists, it’s the condition and extremity of this piece that sets it appart from most others. It is both dramatic and impressively preserved, representing an important opportunity for Mint error enthusiasts. Be sure to view this piece and the rest of the error coins from The Barry Harding Collection, which will be crossing the auction block at in early June. Barry was a collector and specialist in this sector for decades and assembled an extensive and impressive collection with wonderful variety. Fresh to market, we expect the bidding to be fierce.
