The finest NGC-certified 1927-D quarter will make an appearance in our February 2014 Americana Sale to be held in New York City. The annual winter Americana Sale is a drawing card for some of the most active collectors and dealers, many of whom come to the Big Apple in person to enjoy the sights and to join in the auction activities. This Gem Mint State 1927-D quarter imparts a firestorm of intense rainbow iridescence that runs through the full “roygbiv” spectrum, all the while making subtle blends throughout. Both sides engage the eye, and the luster beneath the toning makes the whole coin seemingly come to life.
Not only is it unusually attractive and brightly toned, but it is the finest non-full head example of the date certified by NGC and stands alone at the top of the Census. Only 976,000 examples of the date were struck, the third lowest production figure in the series, 1916-1930 – only the 1916 rarity and the key date 1927-S had lower product tallies. The semi-key status of this date has long been recognized, especially in Gem Mint State, and the spectacular piece to come in our February, 2014 sale is a coin that definitely stands apart from others of its kind.
