Each week, we present a special coin from our current iAuctions selection. Stack’s Bowers is proud to be able to offer such a wide range of American numismatic material in each sale. This week we highlight an NGC-certified 1883-CC Liberty Head eagle, graded AU-55. This rich orange gold toned coin features a good strike, and only mild abrasions from a short stay in circulation. The 1883-CC is a scarce issue in any grade, as only 12,000 pieces were struck, and many entered circulation and stayed there; a lucky few were withdrawn and saved by astute numismatists, and others, by sheer chance.
All Carson City Mint gold coins are popular in the marketplace, especially these earlier date pieces. Finding certified, problem-free examples is often a challenge. Add the general appeal of the AU-55 grade offered here, and this piece should fit nicely in an advanced collection of U.S. gold coins.
