Otto, King of Greece

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries August ANA Auction is now underway. Though the live sessions have likely finished by the time you read this, the Internet Only Sessions will begin Monday August 20th at 9 AM PT. Please visit the Upcoming Auctions page here for more information. One of the highlights for these sessions is a lovely Greek ½ Drachma from the first modern King of Greece, Otto I. After the successful Greek War of Independence (1821-29) against the Ottoman Empire, the three Great Powers (Britain, France and Russia) convened to establish a stable government for Greece. Otto I, a Bavarian prince was elected to rule as King (while a minor, a regency council of Bavarians ruled in his stead). The obverse features a right facing portrait of the young king, with his title: “Othon, King of Greece” around.  The crowned arms of Greece appear within a half wreath on the reverse with 1/2 Drachma (denomination) and 1833 in exergue.
