Interesting Online Session Highlight Kirin “10 Cashes”

There is still time to participate in the Stack’s Bowers & Ponterio April Hong Kong Showcase Auction, as our online session is still open for bids. The session will begin to close on Monday, April 6th at 8:30 PM PST. There are many treasures to be found within this session, so be sure to browse. One of the standout pieces from this portion of the sale is an interesting Kirin 10 “Cashes” piece.

Struck in Kirin Province, which is located in the northeast corner of China and shares a border with Russia and North Korea. The name Kirin literally translates to “Auspicious Forest” and is derived from the Manchu phrase meaning “Along the river.” The iconic dragon design begins with the dragon’s head located at the center of the design, facing right. Its body winds clock-wise for a near full circuit, and as with the provincial silver issues, the dragon is accompanied by a pearl and clouds. A beaded border surrounds the design, with an English legend around. “KIRIN” appears above, with the lower inscription stating “10 CASHES”. Errors in the English legend for the Kirin mint are prolific, and the varieties are legion, however this “10 CASHES” variety is a well-known and popular type. The reverse displays the usual informative Chinese inscriptions; along the top border it reads “Made in Kirin Province.” The lower border inscription describes the denomination of coin, in this case “10 Cash.” The upper and lower inscriptions are separated by two small five-pointed stars. The inner legend contains a larger Chinese and smaller Manchu inscription that describes the coin in general terms: “Valuable Coin of the Kuang Hsu (regime)” while the Manchu characters refer to Kirin Province. This example has a slight die rotation and presents considerable mint red luster and is exceptionally attractive, housed in a PCGS MS-63 Red-Brown holder.
