Among the countless rarities highlighted in our upcoming and highly anticipated Hong Kong auction is an exceptional piece from the lunar series that will have tremendous appeal to lovers of the modern Chinese coins and bullion aficionados. Struck at the Shenzhen mint in 2015 and possessing an incredible 10 kilos of gold (essentially 22 pounds or 321 troy ounces), this titan of a bullion coin stands tall among the immense format coins issued from mints around the world. It emanates from a paltry mintage of just 18 specimens and is marked as number 008 on its edge. This number is not insignificant, as it is viewed as rather auspicious, as well as representing the eighth year in the lunar cycle at the time—the year of the ram.
As would be expected, a ram is featured on the obverse in two ways—a full representation of the animal standing right and with head facing, and another in a somewhat more stylized manner, with head uplifted to the left. The nominal value of 100,000 Yuan is also conveyed, though, given this coin’s tremendous rarity and incredible bullion value, it is wholly inconsequential – a mere fraction of its true value. Housed within a protective hard plastic container and accompanied by its original paperwork from the mint, this remarkable rarity will undoubtedly generate great enthusiasm and excitement when it crosses the auction block as a part of Session C on October 4th!
