Our June 2021 Ancient and World Coins Collector’s Choice Online (CCO) auction will present four highly interesting and very large gold medals celebrating Juan Vicente Gómez, a pivotal and controversial figure in the early 20th century history of Venezuela. Each of the medals weighs a rather hefty 50 grams and offers an AGW of 1.6076 oz. These vibrant and glistening specimens were produced in the early 1990s (likely 1991) as part of the “Bank of the West collection.” Rarely encountered, especially in this large gold format, they feature the facing bust of the military general on the obverse and an angel before a domed building on the reverse. Gómez spent nearly 30 years at the helm of Venezuelan power, oscillating between terms as president and puppet master, pulling all the important strings. After seizing power in 1908, he immediately created economic stability through oil contracts to foreign interests, endearing himself to the poor and working classes by creating jobs and infrastructure. The real money, however, mostly flowed to him and his cronies, as his cabal allowed him to become one of the richest Venezuelans by the time of his death in 1935.
