Stack’s Bowers Galleries to Sell the 1697/6 4 Escudos from the 1715 Plate Fleet

On December 22, 2020, we wrote a blog about two coins in the 2021 NYINC Auction that came from the 1715 Plate Fleet. In the blog, we gave a brief history of the 1715 Plate Fleet saying: “The Spanish treasure fleet of 12 ships was traveling from Havana, Cuba to Spain when, on the last day of July 1715, a hurricane struck near Vero Beach, Florida. These ships were carrying silver, gold, and artifacts, and there are coins that still wash up on the beach to this day.”

The coin featured here is a Peruvian 4 Escudos that is dated 1697/6 and will be offered in the January 2022 Auction of the NYINC. Like the aforementioned coins, this too hails from the 1715 Plate Fleet, providing it with a great historical provenance. This 4 Escudos has received a grade of MS-63 from NGC, and is tied for the second finest certified of the date, with the finer graded at MS-64. This coin will be offered in Session C of the January 2022 NYINC Sale as Lot 2128.

Coins in Motion seeks to enable collectors, bidders, and consignors to accurately appreciate how Stack’s Bowers Galleries coins look in hand. Ultra-high resolution animations depict how luster moves over the coin’s surfaces, while the rotating motion allows for any possible imperfections to be revealed.
