German Taler and other ANA World Coin Internet Session Highlights

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries August ANA World’s Fair of Money live auction sessions of World Coins have ended, and what a tremendous event it was! I’d like to congratulate our successful bidders and consignors. Even though the live sessions have closed, there is still time to own a piece from this remarkable sale. Our world coin Internet Session (Session D) ends Tuesday August 12 at exactly 3 PM PST. Be sure to place your bids early! There are many treasures to be found within this session, including a German Saxony-Albertine Line Taler from 1657.

This classic Vicariat issue commemorates the death of Emperor Ferdinand III. Issued in the German state of Saxony by Johann Georg II (1656-1680), this hefty Taler features an intricate design and is artistically executed. The obverse design features the Duke-Elector in a lavish robe and drawn sword atop a horse facing right. The arms for the region appear just below the horse in a cartouche oval. The legend states “Deo et Patriae” (For God and Fatherland) and the date of 1657. The reverse features a 12-line Latin inscription recording Emperor Ferdinand III’s death, and lists the full titles of the Vicar-Duke-Elector. An acorn appears at the very end of the legend, serving as the mintmark. An exacting strike provides incredible detail for the elaborate obverse design. The piece displays lovely pearl gray toning, with areas of underlying luster throughout. It is graded by NGC at AU-58, just a hair’s breadth away from a Mint State designation.

Be sure to check out our August ANA world coin Internet Session (Session D) which will end on Tuesday August 12 at 3 PM PST. For details please refer to the Events Calendar at www.StacksBowers.com. While our Stack’s Bowers Galleries August ANA World’s Fair of Money Auction is closed for further consignments, we are currently taking consignments of ancient and world coins for our November 2014 official auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo and our 2015 January New York International auction. We are also taking consignments of Asian coins and currency for the inaugural December 2014 Macau Showcase Auction. Time is running short, so if you are interested in consigning your coins and paper currency (whether a whole collection or a single rarity) be sure to contact one of our consignment directors.
