The Stack’s Bowers official auction in conjunction with the ANA World’s Fair of Money in Chicago is shaping up to be a massive sale with some choice highlights and interesting rarities. Today we showcase an exquisite German Taler from the Electorate of Pfalz. This type is seldom seen at auction, so this may be the only opportunity available for years to come.
The obverse bears the regal right facing bust of Johann II von Zweibrucken, who ruled as regent for Frederick V, as the Elector of Palantine from 1610 to 1614. He is depicted wearing his ornate electoral robes, with his abbreviated honorific titles around. The reverse features the various arms associated with Johann II von Zweibrucken, underneath the electoral cap three separate shields representing the Palatinate (Lion Rampant), Wittelsbach (Field of Lozenges) and the Imperial orb, which separates the date of 1611. The Latin phrase around translates to: “The Word of the Lord Endures Forever” a motto of the Protestant Reformation. This piece features a great portrait that is accentuated by toning within the recessed areas of the devices. The reverse is equally impressive. Complete rims and denticles on both sides testify to the centering and quality of manufacture.
