Rare Choice Mint State 1850-O Liberty Seated Silver Dollar to be Featured in our March 2018 Baltimore Auction

The A.J. Vanderbilt Collection, featured in our Official Auction of the 2018 Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo, represents a lifetime of numismatic pursuit that began at Stack’s in 1936. This cabinet showcases a vast array of rarities including the R.L. Miles 1874-CC Liberty Seated dime (tied for finest known) and a Mint State 1795 Heraldic Eagle half eagle.

Dozens of other rarities from the Vanderbilt Cabinet will be brought to light for the first time in many decades, including an exceptional MS-63 (PCGS) 1850-O Liberty Seated silver dollar that ranks among the finest of the issue. The surfaces are mostly brilliant, complemented by the faintest gold at the rim on each side. Rich mint luster imparts a satiny texture to the fields and a dense, frosty appearance to the devices. The strike is sharp for the issue, with even stubborn regions like the obverse stars and the eagle’s head and talons on the reverse delightfully intricate.

The 1850-O silver dollar is the second of just four Liberty Seated silver dollar issues struck at the New Orleans Mint. New Orleans was a flourishing economic hub of the South and coinage was needed to fuel continued growth.  Dave Bowers suggests that “most if not all” of the silver used to coin the 40,000 dollars struck in New Orleans was from melted Mexican dollars that had been used in the commerce of the region.

The 1850-O silver dollars saw extensive circulation and very few survived in Mint State, accenting the significance of the Choice example to be offered in our March 2018 Baltimore auction. PCGS has certified just four coins at MS-63 and just one coin finer at MS-64. With perhaps as few as 15 coins surviving across all Mint State grades, Liberty Seated specialists and Set Registry participants will no doubt bid enthusiastically on this treasure.
