A rare obsolete banknote featuring one of the most iconic vignettes in American currency will be featured in Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ upcoming Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo.
The $1 note from the Bank of Germantown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Haxby PA-150 G8a) has a central vignette depicting a polar bear breaching the water to attack four explorers in a small rowboat. The vignette is titled The White Bear and was engraved by DeWitt Clinton Hay. This is an ever-popular vignette employed on a small number of rare obsolete banknotes produced by the American Bank Note Company.
The note to be sold in our March Baltimore auction is fully issued and in Very Fine condition. It carries a pre-auction estimate of $4,000-$6,000. The note is one of a number of great Pennsylvania obsolete banknotes consigned to this sale.
