Important Currency Collections to be Featured in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Spring Expo

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo, held March 26-29 in Baltimore, Maryland, will present three important collections from separate niches of American currency collecting.

First, The Peter Mayer Collection Part III will feature the final offerings from Mr. Mayer’s obsolete proof note collection, which includes a magnificent $3 color proof from the Mount Vernon Bank of Boston, Massachusetts. Also highlighting the collection is a $50 color proof from the Marblehead Bank of Marblehead, Massachusetts, as well as a $100 color proof from the Bank of the State of Indiana.

An impressive collection of high denomination notes from The Holecek Family Foundation Collection will feature over 250 lots of small-size $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes. Highlights from the collection include six $5,000 notes and three $10,000 notes, among which are a Fr. 2231-H 1934 $5,000 St. Louis Federal Reserve Note graded Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ, and a Fr. 2231-A 1934 $10,000 Boston Federal Reserve Note graded Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. Consignor proceeds from The Holecek Family Foundation Collection will be donated to various charities of the foundation’s choice.

The Henry P. Kendall Foundation Collection will feature early Colonial and Continental currency, presented in its own catalog. Among the highlights of the collection are such rarities as a New Hampshire December 25, 1734 7 shillings note, a Vermont February 1781 2 Shillings 6 Pence note, and a fascinating six-sided Massachusetts June 1722 3 Pence piece.

Other highlights from the sale include a Fr. 95b 1863 $10 Legal Tender Note graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. A Fr. 837B 1914 $5 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note graded Gem New 66 PPQ by PCGS, and the finest graded by either PCGS or PMG will also be sold. In the national currency category, a Fr. 382 1865 $1 from the First National Bank of Pueblo, Colorado Territory, charter #1833, graded Choice About Uncirculated 55 EPQ Star Designation will be offered, along with a rare Fr. 606 1902 $5 from the First National Bank of West Palm Beach, Florida, charter #11073, graded Very Good 10 Net by PMG. Small currency will be highlighted by a Fr. 1890-G* 1929 $100 Federal Reserve Bank Note Star from the Chicago district, graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ by PMG.

Lot viewing for the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo begins February 13-17 at the company’s headquarters in Irvine, California, with additional viewings at the firm’s New York gallery February 21-25, and at the Baltimore auction venue March 2-7.
