The
1912-D Barber half dollar is one the most available issues of the series, with
examples easily acquired in grades through Choice Mint State. However, despite
this availability, well-struck Gems are considerably scarce in today’s market.
The historically inferior striking at this branch mint combines with bagmarks
and other handling issues to severely limit the number of coins grading above
MS-65.
We
have the pleasure of offering in our May 2017 Collector’s Choice Online Auction
one of the finest 1912-D half dollars. Certified MS-66+ by PCGS, it is tied
with just two other examples at the current grade and is surpassed by only one
coin graded MS-67 (PCGS). The NGC Census figures display just one event at the
MS-66+ grade and none finer. It is clear that the present selection is a truly
significant piece.
The
pearlescent surfaces display subtle hints of powder blue and lavender,
complementing richer olive-gold iridescence at the right borders of each side. The
surfaces are impeccable, upholding the assigned grade and certainly flirting
with Superb preservation in many respects. A light mark above HALF on the
reverse is the only imperfection, rendering this piece truly stunning to
behold. This half dollar will hold great appeal for both type collectors and
Registry Set enthusiasts.
This
rarity is a featured highlight of our May 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction,
which will be available for lot viewing at the Central States Numismatic
Society’s 78th Annual Convention, April 26-29 in Schaumburg, Illinois. To
