Among
the exceptional offerings in our August 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction
is a lovely Proof 1869 Liberty Seated dollar. Certified PR-64+ (PCGS) and
approved by CAC, this example is one of the most desirable survivors of the 600
examples struck.
The
central obverse displays subtle olive tones that turn to yellow, amber, and
emerald iridescence at the border. A magnificent rainbow saturates the reverse,
with violet and sapphire at the center yielding to green and honey-gold at the
rim. The surfaces exhibit superior preservation and feature reflective fields
and frosty, untroubled design elements.
This
specimen has a wonderful provenance. It was sold as part of an original 1869
Proof set in the Stack’s sale of the S.S. Forrest, Jr. Collection in September
1972. Offered in lot 872, the 10-coin set was given a brief description of
“light iridescent toning” and sold for $1,900. Incredibly, this set was kept
intact and emerged nearly 45 years later in our March 2017 sale of the Blue Moon Collection, Part
I, where the pieces were
offered individually.
Bidders
will have the chance to acquire this stunning Proof 1869 Liberty Seated dollar
from the Forrest and Blue Moon cabinets in our August 2017 Collectors Choice
Online Auction on Wednesday, August 23. It is the only piece certified
Proof-64+ at PCGS and just 24 rank finer in that category.
