Every once in a while, you get to see the extraordinary cross your desk. Even though the exceptional may be commonplace here at Stack’s Bowers Galleries, there are items that go beyond the exceptional and into extraordinary. Such is the case with a group of high denomination notes that we are pleased to be offering in our August Showcase auction. This group of four individual lots comes to a total face value of $3,000, comprising two notes of the $1000 denomination and two notes of the $500 denomination. It was a titanic sum of money in a time when such a figure represented the wages of almost three years of work for the average laborer.
Each note is in a state of preservation uncommon for most Series of 1918 Federal Reserve Notes. Where a grade of Very Fine or so is often the norm, the assigned grades of these notes range from About Uncirculated 50 to Very Choice New 64. Each piece is free of repairs and impairments typically found on lower grade pieces. Eye appeal befitting that lofty status is likewise evident and each is a treat to behold in-person.
With a combined low estimate of $180,000, specialists and well-heeled collectors will seek to claim these exceptional notes in what is sure to be a fierce bidding war. This opportunity should not be taken lightly as it is unlikely to be repeated in the near future. If you are interested in only the finest of high denomination notes, this lot is for you.
