Offered in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo is the Desh Family Collection. The collection was assembled from the 1940s to the 1960s by a midwestern dry goods merchant and grocer, and includes interesting groupings of coins, mostly from the 1800s. The offered coins appear to once have been part of a larger collection and indeed they were. Unknown to us at the time, the first part of the collection was consigned to us for our March 2013 sale, where it met with great bidding enthusiasm. After the success of that first sale, another heir to the collector contacted Stack’s Bowers Galleries to offer this portion, which we are proud to offer.
Highlighted by a great group of Bust and Liberty Seated half dollars, the collection contains a wide range of numismatic items from Proof three cent nickels to Indian Head cents, to rolls of Mercury dimes and Morgan dollars – something for almost everyone! The fact that these coins have been stored in a safe deposit box since the collector’s death four decades ago will create the stir with today’s numismatists.
Highlights of this collection include:
Lot 5243 1882 Three Cent Nickel. Proof-67 (PCGS).
Lot 5490 1801 Draped Bust Half Dollar. EF-40 (PCGS).
Lot 5494 1805 Draped Bust Half Dollar. AU-50 (PCGS).
Lot 5563 1881 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS).
Lot 7332 1839-C Classic Head Quarter Eagle. AU-53 (PCGS).
