Following three years of reasonably high production from 1805 to 1807, production of quarters was again suspended for eight years, and did not resume until 1815. John Reich’s Capped Bust design had by then appeared on both the dime and half dollar, and was therefore selected for use on the quarter as well, in keeping with the practice of all U.S. silver coins sharing a common design.
Capped Bust quarters were struck with some regularity after 1818 with a few exceptions. None were struck in 1826, 1829 or 1830 and the 1823/2 is a major rarity. For 1831, the diameter was reduced from 27mm to 24.3 mm, and a modified design by William Kneass appeared on the obverse, while the motto “E Pluribus Unum” was removed from the reverse. After 1831, quarters were struck annually until 1922.
