In 2004-2005, the special “Westward Journey” series of nickels was issued which commemorated the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase and the journey of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore that vast territory.
In 2004, two new reverse designs were paired with the previously used obverse; the Peace Medal, and the Keelboat. In 2005, a new obverse was used that featured a ¾ portrait of Jefferson inspired by the 1789 marble bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon. This new obverse was designed by Joe Fitzgerald and rendered by sculptor Don Everhart. Two reverse designs were paired, the American Bison and the Ocean in View. Special sets featuring all the designs were issued by the Mint.
