Upon its introduction, the mint offered a silver-clad version of the Eisenhower dollar to the numismatic community struck in the same alloy as used on the Kennedy halves of 1965-1970. Consisting of outer layers of .800 silver and .200 copper bonded to an inner layer of .209 silver and .791 copper, it contained .3161 oz of pure silver or 40% of its total weight.

These silver Ike’s were struck in both mint state and proof form and a total of just over 21 million of both types were produced. Following the interim bicentennial design, no additional silver-clad Ikes were offered in 1977 and 1978.
