This always popular medal commemorates the business relationship between the new United States and the Netherlands at the time when John Adams was representing American interests there. He was among the very first to own a specimen of this medal, and he encouraged medallist Johann Georg Holtzhey to make sure they were distributed in America as well as in Europe.
