The 1961 ranks alongside the 1962 and 1963 as one of the highest mintage Proofs of this type. While survivors of this 3,028,244-piece issue are certainly plentiful in an absolute sense, precious few can compare to Superb Gems in terms of quality or eye appeal. Indeed, the Proof 1961 is equally as rare as the Proof 1960 with a Deep/Ultra Cameo finish, this despite the fact that the latter issue has a mintage that is only about one third that of the Proof 1961.

The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2018 Philadelphia ANA Auction, where it realized $24,000.
