1956 Franklin Half Dollar
Type 2
The Philadelphia Mint struck 669,384 Proof half dollars in 1956, the majority of which are of the newly introduced Type II reverse hub variety. Although plentiful in an absolute sense, survivors are scarce with the deeply cameoed finishes. With that being said, it is not uncommon to see these coins reach the lofty grades of Proof-69 Deep Cameo at either of the grading services.
The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the August 2012 Philadelphia ANA Auction, where it realized $4,993.
