Proof mintages increased steadily from 1936 to 1942, with 1940 crossing into five-figures for the first time with some 11,827 sold this year. Like most dates, the vast majority are found from PR-64 to PR-67, but enough PR-68s have been certified to enable any determined collector to acquire one if they wish.

The example to the left was sold by Stack's Bowers Galleries in the November 2023 Showcase Auction, where it realized $1,800.
